Dragon Collection

According to some mythological ideas, the dragon was the first creature, from which life took place on earth, thus, the dragon was considered not just a mythical character, but literally a saint creature.

This item is inspired by ornaments found in early dragon rug (17-18th century) of the Safavid period. Dragon carpets are considered as one of beautiful specimen of Garabagh carpets.

They have a unique structure and usually depict the images of various mystical animals. This types of rugs were mainly woven in Garabagh and perhaps in Shirvan and Guba as well, between the 16th and 18th centuries. Some textile fragments with a dragon motif survived from the Ilkhanids Period (XIII-XIV centuries). Dragon motif when used alone symbolizes positive energy in the Azerbaijani decorative applied art examples. It may also symbolize water sources in Azerbaijani Folk Literature. In ancient Turkic mythology, dragon “Büke” or “Evren”, is the symbol of might and power. Some historical sources mention “Dragon City” of ancient Huns. In Kipchak culture Begsha Dragon was considered as a symbol of family hearth. A number of pile and flatwoven carpets from the Safavid Period depict a dragon motif too.
