These earrings have been inspired by the universal border motif known as Laley-Abbasi (Abbasi tulip) named after Shah Abbas, the greatest ruler of the Safavid dynasty.
This motif, also referred to as medahil (“doorways”) or scepter head, is often found in Persian and Talish carpets. This border is reciprocal – each part of the motif has the same shape so that two motifs fit together and are completely congruent. Any of these parts can be interpreted as subject or ground.
